Hungerford Wharf

Hungerford Wharf

Once a busy industrial canal wharf, Hungerford Wharf is now a picture of tranquillity. And a great place to start exploring the beautiful Kennet & Avon Canal!

The Kennet & Avon Canal was born in 1794 when it was agreed that linking the river navigations at Newbury and Bath via a canal would bring huge benefits to Hungerford. It opened new markets and provided cheap transport for bulky goods. Today, it provides a wonderful base for a family day out in the country.

Newbury Racecourse

Newbury Racecourse

horses

Perhaps the biggest testament to how good a racecourse Newbury is comes with the news that it has been voted Racecourse of the Year five times in a row – no other has come close to matching that accolade. The key to Newbury’s popularity is that it has high-class Flat and National Hunt racing throughout they year, with perhaps the best mix of any racecourse – evening meetings with well-known pop groups, Saturday and Sunday fixtures, quieter midweek meetings for aficionados and one of the best jumps races outside of the Cheltenham Festival, in the shape of the Hennessy Gold Cup. It is easy and quick – an hour - to reach by train from London, and by car, and viewing is excellent.
